 미국 시간으로 2010년3월16일, Microsoft는 Las Vegas에서 개최한 MIX10 컨퍼런스에서 IE9을 공개하였다. Internet Explorer 9의 관련 주요 하이라이트는 다음과 같다.

GPU-Powered HTML 5 – Internet Explorer 9 is architected to be the first browser designed to take advantage of modern hardware and operating system (OS) capabilities that bring HTML 5 to life.

A New JavaScript Engine – Internet Explorer 9 will include a new JavaScript engine which will bring significant improvements in script performance.

No Support for Windows® XP – Internet Explorer 9 requires the modern graphics and security underpinnings that have come since Windows XP’s release in 2001. Windows XP users have a fast, safe, reliable and private browser in Windows® Internet Explorer® 8, which will continue to be supported.
